Author:Dawn McWilliams

Release Date: Mar 28, 2008

Rochester, N.Y.―March 31, 2008—The Simon Graduate School of Business at the University of Rochester is ranked among the top 25 business schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in its annual survey. The Simon School tied for 25th with the Olin School of Business at Washington University in St. Louis in the magazine’s April 7, 2008, issue. Simon was 36th last year. The survey also ranked Simon 13th in finance and 24th in accounting among U.S. business schools.

“The Simon School has long been regarded as one of the finest business schools in the world, particularly on account of its small size that allows us to offer an integrated and highly personalized approach to management research and education; analytic, economics-based scholarship and teaching; and a leading academic faculty. Thus, it is indeed gratifying that Simon is ranked among the premier business schools in the world by U.S. News & World Report,” says Dean Mark Zupan. “This ranking, and others of recent note, further confirms our strategic plan to build upon our top-tier level of excellence.”

“Additionally the School was touted in a ‘hot tip’ for getting into B-school,” says Zupan. “The comments focus on our strategy to recruit the best and the brightest where ever they come from and whatever age they are.”

According to U.S. News, “the majority of full-time M.B.A.’s who graduated in 2007 had more than three years’ work experience before business school, according to the Graduate Management Admission Council, but 24 percent had less. If you’re younger and have something remarkable to offer, apply. The University of Rochester’s Simon Graduate School of Businessactively seeks ‘early leaders,’ and students zero to three years out of college make up a third of entering classes.”

“I am exhilarated and proud that the Simon School is beginning to be recognized for the fine quality institution that we are and I look forward to the bright future ahead of us,” said J. Peter  Simon , co-chair of William E. Simon & Sons and Chairman of the School’s Executive Advisory Committee.

Survey results show that the quality of all of the Simon School’s incoming students has increased, while at other schools, it has remained about the same. Simon has invested in admissions quality by closely assessing prospective students’ demonstrated talents, attitude and capacity for leadership. The School has also focused on increased average undergraduate G.P.A., average GMAT scores, and finding candidates with the overall winning attitude and leadership potential for future business success. For example, the average undergraduate G.P.A. jumped to 3.52 (3.46 last year), placing Simon 6th compared to 9th last year. The top 50 B-school average G.P.A. is 3.39. The average GMAT score is 673 (from 667 last year); the top 50 average is 676.

Significant importance has also been placed on corporate partners and recruiting relationships. Recruiters have noticed, as evidenced by recruiter assessment score of 3.5 (out of 5.0) compared to last year’s 3.3 score. Heightened emphasis in several key areas is achieving positive results. In career management and job placement, the average starting salary and bonus is $99,436, compared to $89,528 in last year’s survey; the average for the top 50 B-schools was $105,232. The number of graduates employed at graduation is 78.3 percent up from 71.0 percent last year; the top 50 B-school average was 81.1. And, there was a slight fluctuation in those employed

three months post-graduation, 92.4 percent compared to 91.1 percent last year; the top 50 B-school average was 93.3.

The Simon School provides a premier M.B.A. education to approx. 350 full-time students. The Simon experience is very personalized due to its small size. The School believes that this is a significant asset that gives its students one-on-one service in all areas. The average size of the full-time M.B.A. class among the top 50 B-schools is 475 students.

Each fall, U.S. News & World Report surveys business school deans and directors of accredited M.B.A. programs as well as corporate recruiters on academic quality measures and key indicators.

“We remain committed to continuous improvement and to providing our students with the top-tier M.B.A. education they have come to expect,” says Zupan. “Their success is our ultimate goal, and at the heart of all that we do.”
