“UNFINISHED BUSINESS” LECTURE SERIES HIGHLIGHTS WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP

Rochester, N.Y.―September 8, 2008―Three accomplished women in the national spotlight will deliver lectures on women’s leadership at the Simon Graduate School of Business, University of Rochester this fall. The lecture series, “Unfinished Business: Realizing the Promise of Women’s Leadership,” is co-sponsored by the Simon School’s Center for Leadership Development, the Susan B. Anthony Center for Women’s Leadership, the University of Rochester Center for Entrepreneurship and the Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender and Women’s Studies. All lectures are free and open to the public.

            The lecture series opens on September 22, 2008, at 4:30 p.m. in Schlegel Hall, Room 102 with Jill Tietjen, co-author of Herstory and president and C.E.O. of Technically Speaking, a consulting company focused on improving career options in technology for women. Tietjen will discuss “Herstory: How Women Changed America and What They Can Teach Us.” The lecture will be immediately followed by a reception and book signing at 5:30 p.m.

            Ann McDaniel, vice president of the Washington Post Company, will deliver a lecture titled “Hillary’s Loss: Did Gender Matter?” on September 25, 2008, at 4:30 p.m. in Schlegel Hall, Room 207, followed by a reception at 5:30 p.m. McDaniel oversees three of the company’s divisions: Newsweek, the Gazette Community Newspapers and the Daily Herald. Previously, she spent 17 years at Newsweek where she was managing editor and Washington bureau chief. She led the magazine’s coverage of the Monica Lewinsky story, which garnered a National Magazine Award for reporting in 1999.

            Jennifer Lawless, Ph.D., a national expert on women in politics, concludes the series on October 29, 2008, at 4:30 p.m. in Schlegel Hall, Room 207, with “The Ambition Deficit: Why Women Don’t Run for Office.” Lawless is an assistant professor of political science and public policy at Brown University. Her current research is on political ambition and the manner in which gender affects the decision to run for office. She is the co-author (with Richard L. Fox) of It Takes a Candidate: Why Women Don’t Run for Office.

            “We are pleased to welcome these three outstanding women to the Simon School to discuss women’s leadership,” says Hollis S. Budd, associate dean for M.B.A. administration and external relations. “Their perspective on the role of women in business and public service today will no doubt reinforce the importance of exceptional leadership skills.”

            “In a trailblazing election year for women, the lecture series will help us understand what we need to do to realize women’s leadership potential,” adds Nora Bredes, director of the Susan B. Anthony Center for Women’s Leadership at the University of Rochester.
