Whited to be Installed as Jones Professor

Rochester, NY—February 23, 2009—Toni M. Whited, an expert in finance, macroeconomics and econometrics, has been named the first Michael and Diane Jones Professor of Business Administration at the Simon Graduate School of Business, University of Rochester. The professorship supports a faculty member whose work successfully exemplifies the Simon School mission.

The Simon School will formally install Professor Whited this Tuesday, February 24, at 4:30 p.m. in Schlegel Hall Room 207 on the University’s River Campus.      

Professor Whited is the Kuechenmeister-Bascom Professor at the Wisconsin School of Business at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She earned a B.A. from the University of Oregon, majoring in French literature and economics, and a Ph.D. from Princeton University in economics, working with Ben Bernanke. Professor Whited worked at the Federal Reserve Board and was on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania, Northwestern University, the University of Michigan and the University of Iowa before joining the University of Wisconsin in 2003. In July 2009, she will be joining the Simon School faculty.

Professor Whited has taught in a wide variety of areas in finance, macroeconomics, and econometrics at the undergraduate, M.B.A., and doctoral levels. She has published over 20 articles and has twice won a Brattle Prize for one of the top articles in the Journal of Finance in corporate finance. Her research deals primarily with the effects of financial markets on firm capital budgeting decisions. She has also conducted research in the areas of theoretical econometrics, asset pricing, macroeconomics, and corporate debt policy. She serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Financial Economics and the Journal of Macroeconomics and was one of the founding co-editors of Finance Research Letters.

The Michael and Diane Jones Professorship is awarded every five years to a faculty member whose work successfully exemplifies the Simon mission. Pittsford, New York residents Michael and Diane Jones made the $1.5 million gift in 2007. Michael Jones was CEO and cofounder of Brighton, N.Y.–based Clover Capital Management, which was acquired by Pittsburgh–based Federated Investors Inc. at the close of the fourth quarter of 2008. Jones remains chief investment officer of Federated Clover Investment Advisors. He is a current trustee and graduated from the University in 1976 with a dual bachelor's degree in biology and psychology.
