International Exchange Program

The Simon School offers International Exchange Programs to provide experience abroad to the students anticipating careers with an international focus. Students who participate in the program can receive up to 9 hours of credit towards their Simon MBA Application deadline: April 15, 2011 for 2011-2012 Academic Year.

 The Simon School has formed agreements with ten well-regarded graduate business programs in other countries: 

• Universidad del CEMA, Buenos Aires, Argentina (some courses taught in English (Fall quarter only) quarter system, no limit on number of students accepted to program).
   
• Australian Graduate School of Management, the University of Sydney and New South Wales, Australia (quarter system, limit: 1 student)
   
• Katholiek Universiteit Faculty of Business and Economics, Katholieke Universiteit in Leuven, Belgium (semester system, students can only attend in fall. Limit: 5)
   
• Aalto University Executive Education, Helskinki Finland (modules offered every 2-3 weeks, limit: 2-3)
   
• WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management, Vallendar, Germany (all graduate level courses taught in English, semester system, can only go in fall. Limit: 2)
   
• Schoolof Business and Management Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Kowloon, Hong Kong (semester system, can only attend in fall. Limit: 2)
   
• Leon Recanati Graduate School of Business Administration, Tel Aviv, Israel(quarter system, limit: 2)
   
• Graduate School of International Management, The International University of Japan, Niigata, Japan (classes taught in English, quarter system, no limit)
   
• Norwegian School of Management, Sandvika, Norway (semester system, can only go in fall, no limit)
   
•  IPADE Business School, Universidad Panamericana, Monterrey or Mexico City, Mexico (semester system, can only go in winter and spring quarter, limit: 3 - 4)

Students whose GPA is 3.0 or higher may apply to spend one quarter of their second year at one of the Simon partner schools. Students on academic probation or whose GPA is below 3.0 are not eligible to participate in the international exchange program.

Students will take classes with native students as well as students from around the world. The program provides the opportunity to live and study in a foreign country, to further develop language skills, and to increase students’ multicultural awareness. The program is open to students after completion of their first year.

Students may travel on exchange in the fall, winter, or spring term of their second year. As well, students may choose to go on exchange during the summer between the first and second year. For those partner schools not on the quarter system, the summer or fall terms provide the only options for participation. While students may complete degree requirements on exchange, students may not participate on exchange following graduation nor use the Take 21/22 option for exchange.

• Application
• Two letters of recommendation (one academic and one non-academic)
• Personal Statement
• Transcript

Committee review will commence shortly after deadline and students will receive a written decision within two weeks. Selection will be based on academic performance, excellence in the program, international experience, and overall quality of the application.

Students may petition to receive transfer credit from an approved School International Exchange Program. A maximum of three courses or nine credit hours may be approved for transfer.

In order to receive credit for coursework taken through the Simon International Exchange Program:

• The course must be taken while the student is matriculated in the Simon School
• The courses must be taken at the graduate level
• The courses cannot have been used to meet the requirements of another degree program
• The student must receive a grade of “B” or better to receive transfer credit for the course
• Students cannot receive transfer credit for core course 

All courses must be approved before departure. In general, courses transferred count as unrestricted electives. For a course to substitute for a specific Simon School course or fulfill concentration requirements, the approval of the respective area coordinator is required. Note that grades for courses completed on exchange or not calculated into a student’s cumulative GPA.

Students apply to participate in the International Exchange Program by submitting an application to Nathan Kadar with a course syllabus for each course to be transferred. Courses must be approved prior to the student’s departure. This request should include whether the student plans to transfer six or nine credit hours toward his/her degree. The students should request the Simon School Registrar’s Office to register him/her for GBA 492 (International Exchange Programs) for six credit hours or GBA 493 for nine credit hours. Upon completion of the Exchange Program, students must provide an official transcript showing the courses and grades to the Registrar’s Office before credit can be awarded. Students returning from exchange should be in contact with the Registrar’s Office to make sure the transcript has been received and the credit posted.
