Release Date:

The Simon Business School has named Rob Sands, president and CEO of Constellation Brands, Executive of the Year. The award will be conferred at the School's fifth annual conference in New York City on May 8, 2014.  The award honors a businessperson who has made a groundbreaking contribution to his or her organization, exemplifies the spirit of leadership, demonstrates a deep respect for our nation's fiscal health, and has a significant pattern of public service.

""Rob Sands, with his late father, Marvin, and brother, Richard, has built Constellation Brands into an international powerhouse in the wine, spirits, and beer industry," says Dean Mark Zupan. "We are proud to recognize Rob's outstanding professional and philanthropic achievements by presenting him the Executive of the Year Award."

With a broad portfolio of more than 100 premium brands, Constellation's list of accomplishments is impressive— the #1 multi-category beverage alcohol company and the number three beer company in the US, the #1 premium wine producer in the world, the #1 wine company in Canada, and the #1 producer of New Zealand wine. In 2013, Constellation was one of the best performing stocks in the S&P 500.

Under Rob Sands' leadership, Constellation Brands has significantly grown and prospered, and now has more than 6,300 employees around the world. He joined the company in 1986 as general counsel overseeing legal affairs, in particular, Constellation's acquisitions. Sands has served in various key senior-level positions and in 2007, he was named president and CEO. He is also a member of Constellation's Board of Directors.  In 2013, under his leadership, Constellation acquired the remaining portion of the Crown Imports beer joint venture along with a state-of-the-art brewery in Mexico and perpetual rights to sell the Grupo Modelo brands in the U.S. With the completion of the acquisitions, the company's gross sales are close to $6 billion.

Sands has set a marvelous example of building a winning culture that is at the heart of organizational success, and his steadfast commitment to the betterment of our community has been profound. He is chairman of the board of the New York Wine and Culinary Center, a board member of the Rochester General Health System, a board and executive committee member of Rochester Business Alliance, and a board member for Thompson Health. In 2010, after a devastating earthquake hit Haiti, he provided two company chartered flights with doctors, nurses and medical supplies to assist in the recovery efforts. He maintains that commitment with annual chartered flights to Haiti.  In 2012, Sands served as the United Way of Greater Rochester campaign chair. In 2008, he was named an inaugural member of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York's Upstate New York Regional Advisory Board. Sands' unwavering support for education, health care, and the arts is exemplary. His awards include: the 2013 Executive of the Year Award from Greater Rochester Enterprise, the 2011 Beverage Forum's Lifetime Achievement Award, the 2011 Leaders in Management Award from Pace University, the 2010 Dr. Louis Berger Memorial Award from the American Cancer Society, and the 2009 Wine Enthusiast Man of the Year Award.

The Executive of the Year Award recognizes Sands for his lifelong achievement as an outstanding business leader, for his philanthropic commitment to advancing education, health care, arts and culture in the region, and for his strategic vision and eye for innovation.
